Bauhaus School

The Bauhaus School is known as the design of modernization. This school represents the development of modernism in architecture, art and design and it is the name of a school that became influential at the beginning of the 20th century. This movement emphasizes function in the design of buildings and products with the idea that "form follows function". For this school, art is actually a combination of craft and engineering. For this reason, function is at the forefront rather than aesthetic concerns.

The Bauhaus was noted for its work in the use and development of materials in architecture and furniture design. The school shaped the rationality of the modernism movement with functionalism and geometric forms in furniture.

Furniture Design Approach of Bauhaus School

The movement drew attention to elements such as form, color, texture and material in furniture and argued that their connection details can be considered as ornamentation. It also has adopted a design approach targeting human perception. Designers who adopted this trend went in search of functional furniture. For this reason, in the early 20th century, designers designed furniture that was portable and took into account the function of the product. Future-oriented furniture designs have come to the fore. The names that became known with these designs were the pioneers of the Bauhaus School.

In this period, for the first time, standardization and rationalization for production began to emerge in furniture design. In addition, principles such as ease of assembly, higher quality by using new technology have started to form the basis of the furniture industry that has survived to the present day.

How Does Today's Understanding of Design Differ from Bauhaus?

The aforementioned school has played an important role in bringing the qualities that will be pioneering in shaping today's furniture. Today, however, different products play the leading role in furniture design depending on the material used. The furniture is functional, robust and healthy. Then, which materials are used?

Today, the warmth of wood has been reapplied in modern designs as the wood material is more robust thanks to new technologies...

This is where the materials preferred in today's design approach begin to differentiate from Bauhaus. The Bauhaus, with its use of materials such as glass, concrete and steel created a difference at the beginning of 20th century. But today, the wood material is more robust thanks to new technologies so we see that designers have started to bring nature back into homes by using the warmth of wood in their designs.

5 suggestions to bring the Bauhaus style to our day:

Use simple materials.
Opt for roller blinds. The Bauhaus style likes to let in as much daylight as possible. In addition, roller blinds are also preferred for their simple and functional structure.
Use regular colors throughout the decoration. Thus, your space will have a leaner appearance.
Include simple and plain furniture.
Prioritize functionality. You can find approaches that prioritize function in areas such as television units, shelves, cabinets and you can use empty spaces such as areas under the stairs for this purpose.
